Stephen Fry lurks in Second Life

Stephen FryIf you're not sure who Stephen Fry is, can I direct your attention to his blog and his wikipedia page. He's a quite famous comedic and serious actor, appearing in Blackadder amongst other famous shows, and he's also famous for his erudition as the host of QI.

I've been a fan of his blog, which is relatively new, and his "blessays" and "blisertations" - his blog is not something to skim quickly, but is clever, fun, and interesting as well as blogging his life as an early adopter of technology - something dear to the hearts of many of us.

I have the thinnest of excuses for posting this. In his latest entry (also printed in the Guardian on Saturday) he admits to having a private existence in SL too. I'm not going to try to expose him further than this, but to say a public hello to him.

SL Blogs: MODA Fashion SL

I have to say that, being a wolfie, I'm not big into clothing. However, I understand that fashion is a huge industry in SL, with a ton of followers and a concomitant ton of blogs devoted to the concept. Now, some would say that as a non-wearer of clothes, I'm exactly the wrong person to do any sort of review of a fashion blog. This may be true. However, I think everyone deserves recognition, even niche blogs that don't cater to every visitor, so here it is: MODA Fashion SL.

Hosted by Licentious Maladay, MODA Fashion SL features a nifty in-blog promotional commercial in the upper left-hand corner. From the site: 'What are fashion models wearing? Get their fashion tips, favorite designers and hot new looks! This blog focuses on what's new in SL Fashion. We are looking for the hard to find stuff, those treasures that come by chance, the little touches that change OK into gorgeous! We are also looking for your fashion tips, so leave LOTS of comments.'

Thanks, Licentious, for the tip, and I welcome similar tips from all of you, whatever your blog's focus!

BlogHer Business Conference '07

BlogHer - Where women blogThe BlogHer Business Conference for 2007 is coming up in 3 month's time in New York City, with a packed two-day schedule. Read all about registration here.

The conference addresses questions such as "Should my company blog? How do we decide and then identify the best people to do it? What are the boundaries of "authenticity" and "transparency" for a company blog? How can companies find and talk to the right bloggers? What's the best approach? Are blogs a religion or a tool? What are some pragmatic methods to measure results? Does the cost of social media ever outweigh the benefit?"

Cindy Skybird (better known to us as Cyn Linden) will be there to take part in the "I have enough trouble with my first life" workshop on the second day.

Randy Shore: Vancouver's Embedded Reporter

Now THIS is what I'm talking about! The Vancouver Sun, which brings light to all who enter its pages, is hosting a blog by one of its contributors, Randy Shore, a.k.a. Silas Leroux. He's chosen to go the gonzo reporter route, by writing up his SL experiences in short bursts, just long enough to enjoy, yet not so long that he belabors the point. He makes adventuring in SL seem appealing, and I'd certainly check it out if I weren't already a resident.

My favorite line so far: "I land nearby: I want a truck-tire-sized doughnut more than life itself."

BlogHUD: SLI bloggers say 'We're doomed'

Alice over across the pond at Wonderland has called my attention to this sleep-preventing bit of news. There's a new HUD on the market, and it's called BlogHUD. It allows anyone wearing the HUD to post a comment or two to bloghud.com, where it will join the posts of many other residents.

Obviously, this is a great tool for everyone but the staff of Second Life Insider. This sinple little device turns any resident into a blogger. Granted, the tool does not allow the posting of images, but it does provide a direct link to where the post originated from. What's to keep you all from coming to check us out? Your sense of civic duty?

Obviously, I'm being facetious here, but it did give me a nasty knock when I first read the story. My days of posting some snarky bit of "humor" are over; now I have to actually come up with something interesting to say. Tremble, world!

Informal launch party in Nemesis today

To celebrate the launch of the new blog, we are throwing an informal celebration in Nemesis at the Second Life Insider offices. Come along and meet the bloggers (except Aimee who is away this week) and pick up some freebies at 2 pm SL time.

There will be a formal party later in the month. Watch this space!
