Well, what a ride it has been. This is my 365th day with Second Life Insider. A whole year of writing about Second Life and things related to it. Digging up news tidbits and trying to generally provide you all with useful content and news. In the last year, I've produced 1,120 posts - a total of 367,657 words. We've all been working hard to bring you great stuff, and it's great to see how you've all responded. Journalists, corporates and media agencies read Second Life Insider daily. Linden Lab certainly does.

Second Life Insider is bigger now than it has ever been. The last couple of months have been absolutely massive, and your support has been fantastic. And we've got equally massive changes on the way, too. For the last month, we've been working behind the scenes on a new, expanded site: Massively. Everything you love about Second Life Insider, and a massive dose of news from other virtual worlds, and MMOs, more writers (everywhere I turn, I trip over another great writer that we've swiped from somewhere), more ... everything.

While it's a bit sad to put down the Second Life Insider name, it's even more fun and interesting to be branching out, and covering more good stuff. There's more than 200 virtual worlds and MMOs on our list, and more on the way, including everything Second Life as usual. So this isn't goodbye - it's welcome to SLI's new home. Welcome to Massively.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New Second Life viewer release candidate

Linden Lab has released a new Second Life viewer release candidate, specifically, 1.18.4(RC2). This fixes a number of issues with since the last release. There's a list of those changes below the fold.

The viewer is available from the optional downloads page as usual, and we suspect that this one might just be a little more plausible as a release candidate than the last one.
Since the last release, the following changes have been made:

Fixed new group not appearing in group window until relog

Fixed Trash folders in user inventory

I couldn't quite understand why he'd want ME to write for this blog. I'm still not sure what he saw in me, but now I feel like I'm part of the family.

These last nine months have been so enriching for me, but like Akela, it's time to move on. I promised myself that I wouldn't cry, but I'm just so sad to go. I wish I could tell you more, but that's for another post. For now, just know that I'll be taking this massive opportunity to provide you with even better coverage of the things that you love. I'm pouring some liquor out for you, SLI.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Farewell, Second Life Insider

Filed under: News, SL Insider Business

Those of you who follow me on Twitter have heard me refer to this announcement: I will no longer be writing for SLI. As Lead Blogger, and one of the remaining founding members (along with Aimee), I've found writing for you all to be one of the most rewarding experiences I could have asked for. I've seen amazing things, met wonderful people, and generally had the time of my virtual life! Now I'm moving on.

This is not to say you've heard the last of me, though some of you will be sorry to hear that! No, in fact, I'll be jumping right aboard a brand-new blog, which will be announced tomorrow right here on SLI! So, shed no tears for wolfie; I'll be in good hands. Good, warm, massive hands.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

slscout.com: A New Social Networking Site for SL Residents

slscout.com is the latest SL-focused social networking site, and it's got all the right elements: embedded videos, forums, etc. Even better, they're holding a contest right now wherein users can post their favorite photos, have them rated by other users, and possibly win the First Prize of 25,000L!

Join up today!

(Thanks, Johnvan!)<h6 style="clear: both; His 'DJ For a Cause' mission is to donate his DJ services to anyone, individual or organization, who fits the requirements: Their event must be philanthropic in nature (such as fund raising) and has to embody the Holiday theme of giving to others.

I see this as a great way to promote SL's philanthropic nature, which is embodied in its residents. These days, most of the press goes to sensational events, and not enough to the altruism that I see so often in-world. Nexeus is on the right track with this, and hopes that others will follow this example. Apparently it's going well, attracting over 1,000 players in its first week.

However, DK is calling this approach the 'Second Life For Teens model' -- but they're not using Second Life to do it! Couldn't they have called it the 'Virtual Worlds For Teens model' instead? Not to assume too much about the intelligence of the average member of the public, but I can see people getting confused about this quite easily. And it begs the question: Does DK have an interest in SL at all?

(Via The Bookseller)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Can we call them SLphones?

This Tech Digest story has it that TokyoZERO, in a partnership with a company calling itself Sun (though not Sun Microsystems, as that's not their logo), are apparently working on a way to get SL on your cellphone. Or perhaps not you, but the Japanese. Now, we've been on this before. Is this any different? For that matter, has anyone tried this other service, and does it work? I can't imagine shoehorning all of SL's features into a cellphone, no matter how advanced.
AjaxLife is how we came to know Berry, with her superlative efforts to produce an open-source, web-based, thin-client for Second Life.

Berry cites a number of reasons on her blog:

A significant portion of the grid seems to hate me.

Many of my friends have already left, making SL rather dull.

(The main one) Linden Lab continue to neglect the Teen Grid:

Signup is still impossible.

Upgrading to premium is broken.

No website update in two years.

No MapAPI.

(list of generic complaints that have built up over the last two years go here)

I actually can't afford the extra 17.5% due to VAT

It's sad to see this adept, teenage dynamo walking out of the mainstream, and we here at SLI hope she does well. Likely, in ten or fifteen years, Berry will be something of a superstar in the tech world.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Public JIRA broken

Filed under: News, Linden Lab, Gridbugs

The public JIRA has been spitting unusual (and some incomprehensible) Java error messages at people since this-morning. The statement was issued just minutes ago by Lewis PR, Linden Lab's external public relations handler. Lewis PR provides public relations support for a wide variety of companies and organizations.

"At present, we have no firm evidence of wrongdoing from our own investigations into Wonderland nor from our Abuse Report channel."

Linden Lab therefore has not acted on reports about the site from Second Life users and from Second Life's child avatar community (we are told that reports have been being filed since July) because they have not been able to find any wrongdoing.

Linden Lab's full statement follows, after the jump.

Second Life is a 3D virtual world in which all the content is created and owned by its Residents. It is used by individuals, businesses, non-profits and educational organizations to communicate and collaborate in an immersive and compelling way. All Residents using Second Life MUST assert that they are over 18 years of age and that they will abide by our Terms of Service which prohibit illegal activity and by our Community Standards which prevent broadly offensive behavior. While the vast majority of Residents abide by these agreements and use Second Life in a constructive fashion, as with any communications technology, such as email, the phone or the Web itself, some seek to abuse the system and behave in an offensive manner.

At present, we have no firm evidence of wrongdoing from our own investigations into Wonderland nor from our Abuse Report channel. There's nothing objectionable nor illegal in having a child-like avatar in itself and we must assume innocence until proof of the contrary. That said, Linden Lab is morally opposed to and has zero tolerance for child pornography, simulated or otherwise, within Second Life.

It is a primary concern of ours to keep Second Life a safe and legal environment. Second Life Residents are held to a clearly defined Terms of Service and Community Standards to prevent illegal and/or broadly offensive activities, and it goes without saying that anyone engaged in these activities will be permanently banned from Second Life. Additionally, it is important to clarify that when we discover minors in Second Life, or when their presence is reported to us, we terminate their access. Underage users are automatically directed to Teen Second Life, an area specifically designed for non-adults, and offering them a rich, creative experience collaborating with other teens.

In addition, Linden Lab is in the process of implementing age verification measures to require age verification for entrance to parcels with adult content. Channel 5 News led with the piece - it's all over Sky News. Some of the UK's largest tabloids are picking it up - outlets with millions of readers. UK business magazine, The Business, has just taken up the story.

"users feel the virtual community is unsafe and uncensored; they're also deterred by the huge amount of sexually orientated activity which takes place in the world."

The Business magazine slams Linden Lab for their "unshakeable libertarian positions", and says "This will be a huge set back for Linden Labs [sic]".

Expect to be reading and hearing a lot more about this in the news in the coming days.

Of course, this activity directly contravenes Linden Lab policy - so, why didn't they act days or weeks ago, when this activity was reported to them?

We have been promised an official comment or statement from Linden Lab "shortly". That was nine hours ago.

They will, hereafter only respond to Live Chat or the Web Support Pages.

There is a side comment to the effect that this may not be universal: certainly there are people who still give out their email addresses, it would be interesting to suggest that, for example, Catherine Linden, in charge of PR, can't be reached that way. A policy statement would be useful, but I would suggest not holding your breath for that. There are mailing lists that still request email replies too, so presumably they don't count in this.

We all know SL is growing, and growing faster than LL, appreciably faster. However, is moving to a position of fewer routes of communication a good thing? In light of the earlier news about sexual ageplay in SL, I wonder if anyone will answer our emailed requests for a statement?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Virtual Ageplay Still Too Real

Sky News, previously covered here, has 'discovered' Wonderland, a sim in which Ageplay is condoned at best, and encouraged at worst. A representative from the Kid Avs community has made this statement: "It's really upset alot of us as we've known about this place and its reputation for weeks, and no matter how much we AR linden lab or IM the Lindens ourselves, they don't seem to want to close it down. Now it's our Kid Av community that's going to get it in the neck. Its like, what was the point of starting up all those policy reviews about broadly offensive behaviour, then not doing anything when a real problem sim appears? Its very frustrating, all our hard work ignored."

Now, let's understand a few things here. According to the article, "Wonderland is a virtual children's playground where paedophiles cruise and kids are solicited," said Jason Farrell, a Sky News reporter who's reportedly been researching this for some time. Well, on the surface of it, there's no actual proof, once again, that these child avatars are being driven by actual children. It's likelier that these are adults roleplaying as children. Regardless, this is exactly the sort of 'broadly offensive' behavior that Linden Lab is famously against, yet nothing has been done about Wonderland, despite repeated entreaties over a period of weeks from the community of residents who roleplay nonsexual children. Of course, the mainstream press pick this up and run with it, making Linden Lab look bad, the child avatar community look bad, and all of us in Second Life look bad by tenuous association.

We've contacted Linden Lab for a statement, but received no response by the time we went to press. If/when we get a reply, we'll follow up. The way Sky News is pushing this right now, you can bet that none of us have heard the last of this.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Secondcast is no more

Filed under: News, Mixed Reality, Machinima
Back when I was a wee newblet (the second time around), Secondcast was the Second Life podcast to listen to. Since that time, almost two years ago, they've recorded 63 total episodes, of which only about 13 of them were in the last nine months. One fifth of the cast, Lordfly Digeridoo, recently pronounced Secondcast dead, after months of inactivity.

While I can't speak for them, I can speak as someone who has been on the show four or five times, with the latest being an episode that never aired in July. I heard the tone of the program change before me. What was once a fun project ended up taking a backseat to their own personal projects. Walker Spaight wrote a book, Johnny Ming and Torrid Midnight went to work for the Electric Sheep Company, Lordfly Digeridoo for Millions of Us, among others, and Cristiano Midnight busy as ever with SL Universe.

Instead of focusing on the fact that it's gone, though, I'd rather relate a happy memory I have from the show. After having been on a couple of times, Johnny asked me to make an episode into a Machinima. It turned into a total disaster. The rest of the cast was really bored and did not hide that fact. They goofed off when I needed screenshots, then got cranky before they were to watch all the Machinima.

Read on for the rest of the story ...

The premise of the Machinima was simple. We'd chat for a few minutes about what the Ed Wood Festival in Second Life was about, and then we'd MST3K SL Machinima. Positioning everyone was an absolute nightmare, and it was one of my first times doing Machinima for someone else, so I was really nervous. In the end, it was so late, that Cristiano fell asleep and Lordfly had to leave to be able to get up for school the next day. Johnny seemed to be the only one enthusiastic about it.

The Machinima itself was pretty challenging for my dinosaur of a machine (at the time). I listened to the entire podcast and then cut it into individual sections, line by line, for each cast member, for roughly 10 minutes of audio. After that, I rendered each piece through Crazy Talk, a third party program by Reallusion, designed to animate pictures. In the end, I spent many hours on it, and my computer wouldn't render it into one piece. I had to run five rendered pieces through Windows Movie Maker, because Sony Vegas wouldn't do it.

That was about a year ago, and the episode was titled, "Let's Skate!" I've learned so much since then, upgraded my computer, and done plenty of contract work. I'll never forget my big break, though. Thank you for the memories, Secondcast!

Did you have any special memories of Secondcast? They are encouraging anyone affected by the double-billing (it appears you will have to go and check - or maybe check with your card company) to file a ticket through the Support Portal.

If the stories we hear have any grain of truth to them, then double-billing land-use fees to some users is an ongoing problem with Linden Lab's billing system - as well as users who are unable to process payments to Linden Lab at all.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

CNN coming to Second Life

According to MEDIAWEEK, during the week of November 5th, CNN will be putting a new spin on an old idea. Instead of embedding a reporter in Second Life, they will be having the residents do all of the work. However, instead of submitting tips to existing blogs, the news will actually come from the residents.

In order to prepare our fair citizens for their duties, they will be handing out kits, allowing them to send stories and photos. In addition, they will be offering weekly "news meetings" and training sessions, led by CNN.com staffs, and even Larry King himself! Furthermore, you'll be able to read the news on kiosks throughout the grid.

I wonder if it will consist more of real life or Second Life news? I guess we'll find out next week!

UPDATE: I just spoke with a Director of Public Relations at CNN Worldwide and she clarified some things for me. While it's a possibility that Larry King and other on-air personalities will be in SL, plans have not been finalized in this matter.
